Important questions to ask a Wedding Photographer before you hire them

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, and you want to make sure that every moment is captured perfectly. When you’re looking for a wedding photographer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure that you hire someone who understands your vision, is experienced, and will capture your big day in the way you want. Here are some important questions to ask before you hire a wedding photographer.

1. Can you describe your APPROACH to capturing weddings?

Wedding photographers have different approaches to capturing weddings. Some are more hands-on and will guide you through the process, while others take a more documentary approach and capture moments as they happen. It’s important to understand a photographer’s approach to ensure that it aligns with what you want for your wedding day.

My style and approach is largely candid with a soft and romantic appeal.

I aim to create a rich collection of relaxed and natural photographs with a good blend of creative images that will make your wedding stand out and bring a lot of fun along the way. On the wedding day, it's 80% documentary coverage and 20% gently guided photos that will make you look and feel your best. My editing style is natural and timeless. I want colours to look true to life. Green grass is green.

2. What is your photo EDITING STYLE?

When inquiring about a photographer's editing style, it's crucial to understand that each photographer has a unique approach to post-processing that contributes significantly to the overall look and feel of the final images. The editing style encompasses the way colors are enhanced or muted, the balance of light and shadow, and the overall aesthetic choices made during the post-production phase. Some photographers prefer a timeless and classic style, aiming to capture the essence of the moment without excessive manipulation. Others may lean towards a more vibrant and bold editing style, emphasizing vivid colors and contrast for a dynamic effect. Whether you're drawn to a light and airy feel or a moody and dramatic atmosphere, discussing editing styles beforehand will help the photographer tailor their approach to best reflect the couple's personality and preferences in their wedding photographs.

TIP: Take a look at the photographer's Instagram account. The overall aesthetic of the page will provide you with a comprehensive sense of their style and approach.

3. Can I see a FULL WEDDING GALLERY?

A photographer’s portfolio showcases their best work, but it’s also important to see a full wedding gallery to get a better sense of their style and the quality of their work. Asking to see a full wedding gallery will give you a better idea of what to expect from your own wedding photos.

4. What’s included in your PACKAGES?

It’s important to ask what’s included in a wedding photographer’s packages to ensure that you’re getting everything you need. Some photographers include engagement sessions, prints, and albums in their packages, while others only offer digital files. Make sure to clarify what’s included in their packages and whether they offer any add-ons. Also waiting for your wedding photos can be nerve-wracking, so it’s essential to ask a photographer about their turnaround time. Some photographers take longer than others to deliver their photos, so it’s important to clarify how long you can expect to wait.

5. Are you INSURED?

Insurance is an essential part of running a successful wedding photography business. It protects photographers and their clients from unexpected events and provides peace of mind for all parties involved. It’s important for photographers to consider the risks they face and invest in the right insurance policies to protect themselves and their clients.

Also if you are considering Filming and/or photography at a National Monument or historic site it can only take place with prior written permission issued through your Office of Public Works liaison contact. Your photographer must have public liability insurance. More information and list of sites here.

Choosing the right wedding photographer can make all the difference in how your wedding day is captured. By asking the right questions, you can ensure that you hire someone who understands your vision, is experienced, and will capture your big day in the way you want.
