Spring Wedding at Waterford Castle with an Outdoor Ceremony

Waterford Castle is one of Ireland's most unique wedding venues, and Lorea and Colm's beautiful May wedding was a perfect example of why so many couples fall in love with this private island estate.

Set on its own island in County Waterford, Waterford Castle offers a wonderful combination of history, nature and romance. For Lorea and Colm, it provided the perfect setting for a relaxed outdoor wedding ceremony surrounded by family, friends and the beautiful castle gardens.

Why May Is a Wonderful Time for a Waterford Castle Wedding

May is one of my favourite months for wedding photography in Ireland. The days are longer, the gardens are bursting into life and the weather is often warm enough to comfortably host an outdoor ceremony. One of the highlights of this wedding was seeing the stunning wisteria in full bloom around the castle. The soft purple flowers framed parts of the estate beautifully and added an extra touch of magic to the surroundings.

The fresh spring colours throughout the grounds created the perfect backdrop for photographs, while the mature trees and gardens provided endless opportunities for natural and relaxed portraits.

An Outdoor Ceremony at Waterford Castle

Lorea and Colm chose to hold their ceremony outdoors on the lawn behind the castle.

With the historic castle as a backdrop and guests seated beneath the magnificent trees, the setting felt both intimate and grand at the same time. Outdoor ceremonies at Waterford Castle offer couples a unique opportunity to fully embrace the beauty of the estate while enjoying a relaxed atmosphere with their guests.

As a wedding photographer, it was a joy to capture the ceremony from both ground level and from above, showcasing the scale and beauty of the location.

Meaningful Details Throughout the Day

Each guest received an oak sapling to take home and grow, creating a lasting reminder of the wedding day that will continue to flourish for years to come.

Lorea and Colm also planted their own oak tree together during the celebrations using soil brought from two places that held special meaning to them. It was a beautiful symbolic moment representing two lives coming together, putting down roots and beginning a new chapter as husband and wife.

Wedding Photography at Waterford Castle

Waterford Castle offers incredible variety for wedding photography. From the historic stone architecture and castle interiors to the woodland walks, gardens and riverside views, there is no shortage of beautiful locations for portraits.

Planning Your Wedding at Waterford Castle

For couples considering a Waterford Castle wedding, one of the biggest advantages is having everything in one location. Guests can arrive via the short ferry crossing before enjoying the privacy and exclusivity of the island for the day.

Whether you're planning an outdoor ceremony, an indoor ceremony within the castle, or a church ceremony followed by a reception at Waterford Castle, the venue offers an unforgettable setting for your wedding day.
